The Barkeep pokes his head back down and looks over to where Josette's light illuminates the passage. "Eh? Never seen that before!"
As everyone is peering into the tunnel, a strange scratching and scurrying noise can be heard coming from within. With Josette's staff shining down that way, you see a strange blob of black and brown fur moving swiftly towards you. As it gets closer it becomes clear that this is not one but many, rather large, hungry looking rats swarming its way towards you. What do you do?
Josette, mark 1 XP

Cornelius examines the situation thoroughly, concluding the area is too cramped for Cicada to be moved around even if he could fix it immediately. He addresses Sul and Nyota, "Either hurry up here and shut the cellar door, or do something stupid and heroic! No time for arguing!"

"Ah, rats, it's rats! Why did it have to be rats?" This could get ugly, but they'll have to deal with them sooner or later so might as well start now. He tries to recall the best way to get rid of these things.

Most rats, big or small, tend to eat just about anything, people being no exception. You know these large cave rats have rather sharp teeth, capable of tearing through armor and ripping flesh from bone.
Your monster hunter instincts remind you that, as with most swarms, being able to take on more than one at a time is usually the key to victory. Fire would work quite well to sear the flesh of these voracious scavengers.

"Best to burn 'em, then--spells, oil, booze on fire, whatever!" he says, reaching for his trusty arsenal for some oil to light and throw at the beasts.
<Alea> StarmanXL, on the arsenal roll for lamp oil or somethin to burn 'em I dunno: 11 [2d6=5,4]
And bingo, right at the top the oil and flint! Ghetto grenades are the best. He quickly lights and lobs the thing at the mass of rats. However, he has to put himself in view of the rats to get a good shot!

The flaming projectile arcs into the passageway, smashing into ground just ahead of the leading rats. The burning oil splashes out, perfectly covering the swarm of rats, biting at their hair and flesh. The rats, quite on fire, press on even harder, bursting forth from the opening and leaping at the poor gnoll standing there. What do you do?

He knew it wouldn't be that easy to take 'em out, and it doesn't help that Cornelius and Josette are running. Getting behind Sul, he quickly reaches into the bag for another lamp oil jar...
<Alea> StarmanXL, arsenal for another ghetto grenade: 7 [2d6=2,3]
But when he pulls it out he realizes that this isn't oil, but rather a jar of grandma Mpigajii's special cooking sauce, which is really just something gnolls use to season meat. Don't ask what's in it, if you're not a gnoll, you don't want to know. But it's kinda sweet, so maybe the aroma will distract the rats, or make the floor slippery or something, he doesn't know. He tries to chuck it over Sul's head. Bombs away!

Sul, from all your time spent aiding the churches, you've been at the side of many sickly people. All to often, you encounter rats with these folk, though never quite this big. It is commonly whispered that these rats are the source of disease. Heedless of such knowledge, you realize you must save Nyota from this flaming rat attack. You shoulder charge into the rats as they fly towards Nyota, knocking them from their course but their flaming bodies burn you and their sharp claws and teeth scratch you. You take 5 damage. (8:28:28 AM) Alea: dumptruckman, 1d6+1 rat swarm attack (1 piercing): 5 [1d6=4]
Nyota slings the sweet cooking sauce out of its container and it splashes all about the rats, sizzling briefly as it quenches the fires. The rats, seemingly confused now, gnaw at each other, hungry for flesh, any flesh apparently. A few of the rats turn their noses up towards Nyota, apparently sniffing out the source of the sweet sauce, and begin their charge anew. Three of these freakishly large and horridly burned critters bound towards you. What do you do?

A tear rolls down his cheek as the smell brings back memories of when grandma used to cook the carcasses of... Nevermind. There's more important things, namely, rats. "Hey, I ain't on the menu!" He shouts as he dispenses with the bag in favor of his two handed axe. "Sul! Get back, I got this!" He says, stepping out from behind sul and up to give a sweeping swing at the advancing rodents.

As the rats jump at Nyota, he swings his axe right to left, slashing clean through the first and lodging into the spine of the second. The third rat leaps, sinking its huge teeth into Nyota's exposed right arm. Shaking off the vicious attacker and giving a quick axe swipe back the other way, Nyota dislodges the stuck rat with a loud crack into the last living rodent, sending both sprawling out onto the cold cellar floor. Take 4 damage. (9:00:22 AM) Alea: dumptruckman, 1d6+2 couteRATtack: 4 [1d6=2]
The room is filled with a smell of sweet cooked meat mixed with burnt hair, equally invoking hunger and nausea. All enemies are vanquished but the secret passageway remains open. Who knows what else lurks within?

Nyota swears sharply in his tongue as he is bit, throwing the rat off. But he sees that the battle is done, and breathes a sigh of relief. "That's right, rats are no match for us!"
When Sul approaches, he stops, curious, and but soon impressed as the paladin's holy magic knits the wounds closed. "'Preciate it," he says. "Thanks for the shield back there too. That helped a lot as opposed to OTHER PEOPLE I KNOW!" He calls the last part mockingly up towards the ladder. "Anyway, rats are dead, and there's still a passage to explore, so let's get to it! Man, I'm starving. Anyone else hungry?"

"I'm sorry," Josette starts as she climbs down again, "I'm afraid of rats. Very afraid," she says, poking her lit staff into the dark hesitantly.
"Maybe I can do something to keep them out of the building..." she mumbles.
What would I need to ward the building against rats and mice, as per ritual

Josette, you know that most warding rituals are fairly simple. First you must inscribe the appropriate magical symbols onto the location you wish to ward. For the tavern you're going to want to places runes at all the locations a rat might enter from. Then you need some part of the creature you are trying to ward off along with something that will naturally ward away that creature. In the case of rats, mint or peppermint leaves should suffice. With the combined ingredients, you can chant some appropriate verses within the location to ward and voila, ritual complete.

Cornelius pops his head into the opening at the top of the stairs. "If you two are done, I have a poultice and some herbs if you need healing." He disappears as he sets back to finishing up Cicada's repairs.
