Still smoothing her hair, Josette also looks through the opening.

Cornelius peeks in as well, behind the safety of the larger Sul and Nyota

As the cellar door flings open, the strangely pulsing light gathers into a ball and presses into to the descending ladder, sliding down into the darkness below. The ball's faint illumination pushes through the shadows as ink mixing into water, cascading down to the stone floor. The darkness, seeming to move on it's own accord, retreats in ragged fits and starts away from the glowing orb, opening a pathway as the ball advances towards some unseen destination. The light moves out of sight, though in it's wake you can now clearly see the ladder and floor below the opening, and yet, all around where the ball passed, remains the thick, solid darkness, which the light from above does not penetrate.

Josette casts a spell (2:20:15 PM) Alea: GeneralSpoon, cast light: 10 [2d6=2,6], and the end of her rosewood staff sheds light. "Well, what are we waiting for?" she asks as she begins going down the ladder.

"Spooky," he says, and without further ado goes down right after her. Wouldn't be good if there was something down there waiting for them and she was alone.

Nyota shrugs. "I'll be behind you, shining armor," he says, keeping his arsenal close by. What a freaky place--it's almost as if he would be sucked in if he reached out and touched the darkness.

As you all gather down at the base of the stairs, the tendril-like edges of the supernatural darkness wither away, making room for the four of you. You see the guiding light some thirty paces away, stopped at the base of a cluttered shelf, gently bobbing up and down. Just as Sul begins to make his way down the magically lit corridor, the light from Josette's staff winks out as it plunges into the unyielding darkness, leaving only shadows between you and the glowing orb. All around Josette's staff, the shadowy substance retreats at first, leaping away, back into the greater whole, but then, as if gathering courage, it leaps onto the length of the staff and begins crawling swiftly along the handle.
Josette, this darkness is alive, and you can feel its anger. You feel it tugging at your staff as tendrils of this living shadow continuously emerge, attaching themselves onto the wood, closer and closer to your hands. What do you do?

Josette, mark 1 XP
The strength of the darkness is deceiving and Josette's hands slip off the staff as she attempts to throw it into the light. The wood quickly disappears into the shadows, seemingly gobbled up by the creature.
Josette, you recall reading about living shadows in your school texts. You remember the scariest part about them was how they, like a perfect assassin, could silently strangle their victims.
All around, shadowy tendrils come to life and reach out towards the others. What do you do?

Nyota, you have never encountered this creature before, but with your extensive knowledge of monster hunting, you know the one thing that creatures of darkness hate is the light. Unfortunately, this particular creature seems rather resistant to most light, though you did note, it seemed particularly annoyed by Josette's magical light. Fortunately, you know that there's usually more than one way to skin a cat, and with a creature like this, what backup method do you know, while not perfect, is still effective?

Dammit, this looks like a real annoying one. Nyota can't recall ever seeing this, but he does know that the witch doctors and hunters from his homeland had a way to keep creatures of the dark at bay... For a time. They would hold something of personal significance or jewelry and chant "mwanga jyuu ya nchi" to repel the creature until they could come up with something or escape. Hopefully. No idea if it'll work now, but hey, worth a shot!
"Yknow, gnolls have a saying, " he says, reaching at a necklace of bone jewelry about his neck." When you're in unfamiliar territory and you have some creature of darkness barreling down on you, just raise some jewelry or something significant and chant 'mwanga jyuu ya nchi' and it will recoil, maybe! " He looks to the light." At least until we get to the light! Say it with me! Also keep moving! Mwanga jyuu ya nchi, mwanga jyuu ya nchi... "
Well it's worth a shot, though he has no idea if it will even work, and if so for how long.
