Welcome to the World's End campaign Out Of Character thread.
You do not need previous experience with Dungeon World to join the fun. Just let me know in this thread if you're interested or, more preferably, make a character and post it here.
Campaign Concept
You will play in a world torn asunder. In the beginning, all that exists is you, your party, The Barkeep, and World's End Tavern. The world will be constructed around you, quite literally. As a player, you will play a significant role in the construction of the world, from the ground beneath your feet, to the laws of nature itself.
What is Dungeon World?
Dungeon World was created by modifying Apocalypse World to work for a classic fantasy setting. It is a rules light system that encourages roleplay instead of rollplay. The players can focus on the fiction and the GM can call for rolls when appropriate. Dungeon World is basically what you thought D&D would be like. Combat is very different from Pathfinder or other d20 systems. There are no combat rounds so the action just flows with the fiction. It is because of this that I believe DW will work very well with play-by-post.
As a player, you can jump in without knowing the rules fairly easily but reading about the basic moves would be a good start as they cover just about all the rules you need to understand besides the ones on your character sheet. Moves are the basic idea behind the whole system. They basically state that when you do something specific, you can then follow some rules, typically by rolling 2d6+[some bonus], and see what happens.
To help aid in character creation, I feel that the following terms should be explained:
+x forward - means you get a bonus on your next roll (possibly a specific type of roll).
+x ongoing - means you get a bonus on your rolls (probably on specific types of rolls) until some condition is met.
hold - hold are basically charges you use to power something - this should be described with whatever gives you hold.
Character Creation
Go here to learn how to create a character - Dungeon World SRD - Basically just click on the class that interests you and choose from the options it lists.
Hold off on selecting bonds for the time being!
All standard character classes are allowed. I will consider custom races and alignments for each. Also, you may choose to select a character from the advanced selection here but I will approve each on a case by case basis. (Barbarian and Mage are pre-approved however)
A single pdf that includes almost everything you need to know (including character sheets) can be found here
Rules
1. Posting Schedule: Dungeon World is very well-suited for PBF play, since it's pretty easy for the game to keep rolling along even if an individual player is unable to post for a while. That being said, players should do their best to check in regularly and post a minimum of once every 3 days, more if possible. I do understand the difficulties of posting more than once every day or two, and this can be complicated by time zones, so I ask that everyone try to be courteous and patient. I will usually be online every day and will check and respond to anyone who has performed an action or asked a question.
2. If a player knows they are going to be offline or otherwise unable to play for an extended period, they should let the group know in advance here in the OOC thread.
3. If a player misses the posting deadline, the game will go on and that person will be skipped. If this happens in the middle of combat the PC will contribute very little. If it happens during a role-playing or decision making point, then that PC is assumed to remain quiet and assent to whatever decision the other PCs have come to.
4. This is a learning game, so if there's anything that's unclear as we go along please don't hesitate to ask me about it here in the OOC thread or, if you prefer, by private message.
