You’re all sitting in a small room in a cave. A weathered, old, winged dwarf holding a staff enters the room. “I bid thee good evening,” he says. “I am Driso, and I’ve called you here this evening to request your assistance. The Empire of Man and Dwarf has become…” He coughs and hacks for few seconds. “Corrupt, and it has forgotten what it once stood for,” he continues. “I’d like to recruit you to the Brothers of Freedom. I can sense…” He pauses. “A great potential in you. It is as if you’re touched by destiny. With that power, we might be able to overthrow the Empire and restore it to its peaceful past,” he finishes, and sits down. You can barely hear him, now. “... Maybe this fight will finally end…”

"Speak up, please. I can hardly hear you," says a middle-aged man with seven large scars on his face. He begins to brush his golden, Fabio-locks out of his hair, but grumbles and removes his wig. The torchlight glinting off his chrome-dome with five large scars, he continues, "You've put food in my belly, and outfitted me. I appreciate that, and will return the favor. Please do not preach to me though."

A young man, clad in chainmail, speaks up. "Potential? What...what sort of potential? I am more than willing to join the Brothers of Freedom, but what makes me so special?" The man has blonde hair, and a youthful and eager countenance. "Whether or not this 'potential' makes me special, I am willing to contribute."

A young man enters the room in haste, stopping in front of Driso with a quick salute. The most interesting thing about this newcomer is the blue dachshund pup staring at you from his backpack. "Sir! The area is clear! So... sir... why exactly was I called here?"

A young woman with brown hair and a purple cloak speaks up: "I've no interest in hearing your flattery, old man. I've come here as asked; what are we to be doing next?"

Leaning up against one of the wall of the cave with his arms crossed, the final person, a rough man in his mid-20s, in the cave spoke up. "Heh, I don't care much about the Empire or its actions, but I have my reasons for fighting them. Stop with the nonsense about 'potential' and just point us in the right direction."

"Heh. I like your attitude, Zephyr."
"Vulthen ... all I know is I sense some sort of magic to you, even though I don't think you cast any... That, and I have here..." He draws some papers "Some copied pages from Path of Defiance... and one of them describes someone just like you. Why, I know not..." He puts the pages away.
"Luce... I brought you because it was your turn for a recruitment drive, to see how it's done."
(at GS, whose red shirt has not been named so far as I can tell) "Very well, then."
He coughs a bit more.
"Sorry... age is catching up with me, I fear... But to answer Jenara's question: One of our ... spies... has informed us that the Empire is transporting certain forbidden materials in a caravan that will come by the near road in ... three days. Our objective is to capture it, both for study and to perhaps find a way to undermine the Empire. Beyond that, we need to conduct some missions to make the people regard us similarly to how they regard The Bluejay."

"What kind of forbidden materials," asks the unnamed bald man, his wooden spoon in the process of taking his soup to his mouth, "Contraband, like counterfeit currency, illegal substances, or what?"

"Soul Gems."

"I'm going to have to apologize, but I don't know if I know what a soul gem is. I don't remember anything about them, that much is certain."

"A soul gem is used to trap the souls of the dead, and use them as components for spells."

"Normally, when a being dies, their soul goes to Pharasma's Boneyard for judgment. If a soul gem is made, however, by a daemon or certain spellcasters, then the soul is instead trapped within a gem, to be used usually... usually to power expensive spells, but sometimes as decoration. Daemons are ... quite fond of the process."

"Ugh, daemons...can't stand fiends..." Vulthen grimaces. "I'd be happy to help intercept the caravan. Though I must ask...what is Path of Defiance?"

"It's... I want to say it's a book of prophecy, but what little I've read disagrees. I'm not entirely certain, but it certainly talks about some strange events."

"This gem sounds like a blasted abomination." Zephyr said as he ran a hand through his brown hair. "But now I have to ask, what do you plan on doing with it?"

"In any event, lets try and make the acquisition as bloodless as possible," the bald man says, letting his spoon drop into his empty bowl.

"If you wish to not harm the couriers, then I have no objections. But there will be a token guard force, and they will fight to kill. As for the soul gems, I found a strange scroll about thirty years ago that taught me how to sunder the power of a soul gem, releasing the soul within." He coughs some more, and takes a quick drink from a hip flask. He continues in a much clearer voice, "I intend to release every one of them. And then, we can investigate what the Empire was using them for."

"Correct. You can spend the next few days integrating yourselves with the rest of the Brothers of Freedom"

"Excuse me for a moment, but: Brothers of Freedom? Are you certain? It would seem that," nods at Jenara, "there are Sisters of Freedom as well."
